Samoa
(Monoe von Reiche)

The doll is made of imprinted bark cloth. It is the original way of making a doll out of rolled up piece of bark cloth. She is called "tutumanu' as part of a sculptures series. "Tutumanu" means standing bird' and was the name of one of my ancestors. The doll is not dressed in typical conventional dress. I t just evolved as is. The hair is made of sinnet or coconut husk fibre that is usually woven into a rope which is still used in the lashing of posts and boats /canoes etc.
